How to Order a Bonfiglioli Reducer: A 6-Step Checklist for Motor Shaft Couplings and Servo Motors

Step 3: Confirm the duty cycle, not just the ratio

Here's the thing: a Bonfiglioli reducer with the same ratio can come in different service classes. I assumed "same ratio" meant "same unit." It doesn't. A conveyor that runs 24/7 needs a heavier duty class than one that runs twice a day.

If you're not sure, ask the supplier for a recommendation. Don't order a "cheaper" Bonfiglioli reducer if you can't explain why the part number is a valid substitute.

Step 4: Decide whether you actually need a gearbox

Step 5: Check the small parts—like linear bearings—before you send the PO

I once added an LM8LUU linear bearing to an order without checking its dimensions. It seemed small enough. If you've ever searched "what size is lm8luu linear bearing," the answer is 8 mm inner diameter, 15 mm outer diameter, 35 mm length. The "L" means long, so it's 11 mm longer than a standard LM8UU. That difference matters when your rail length is tight.

But "compact" doesn't mean "interchangeable." A linear bearing has to match the mating rail. If your guide rail is 8 mm and your bearing is 12 mm, you're not going to fix it with a hammer. (Don't ask.)

Checkpoint: Create a "small parts" line for every bearing, seal, coupling element, key, and shaft lock ring. Write the dimensions next to each part number.

Step 6: Send the complete spec to a supplier who answers questions

Small orders deserve real service. When I was starting out, the suppliers who treated my $300 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $30,000 orders. If a Bonfiglioli distributor doesn't return your calls because you're only buying one motor shaft coupling, that's a warning sign.
