The real cost of a reducer is the cost of being wrong — wrong lead time, wrong technical support, wrong duty rating. That's what determines whether your 'savings' actually save anything.

What actually matters when buying a Bonfiglioli reducer

Assuming the brand fits your application, here's what I check before issuing a PO:

Published technical data. Bonfiglioli publishes full specs for their planetary gearbox range — efficiency curves, backlash values, service factors, thermal limits. If a manufacturer won't publish those details, it's not protecting trade secrets. It's protecting its sales team from awkward questions.

A service factor that isn't exactly 1.0. The lowest quote will always show a gearbox that just barely meets your theoretical load. Your first jam, your first overload, your first 40°C summer day will teach you what 'marginal' means.

Warranty claims process. Ask what happens if it fails before you buy. A 24-month warranty with a local distributor is worth more than a 36-month warranty that requires shipping to another country and a six-week inspection period.

Delivery certainty. This is the most underrated factor in B2B buying. In my experience, a vendor that says 'we'll try to get it out in X weeks' costs more than one that confirms a date and hits it. That's true even when the confirmed date costs a bit extra.

Electric actuator types vs. gearboxes: a budgeting decision

Every quarter, an engineer specs a high-end electric actuator for a continuous rotating application. I get the appeal. Electric actuator types — rod-style linear actuators, rodless linear slides, and rotary actuators — look like the modern answer to mechanical power transmission.

But the right comparison isn't 'which is more advanced.' It's which meets the requirement at the lowest total cost.

Electric actuators are excellent for point-to-point positioning with high precision and programmability. For continuous rotating torque — conveyors, mixers, agitators, winches — a geared motor or reducer is still the more cost-effective solution, and usually by a wide margin.

Same logic applies when a servo motor manufacturer quotes you a system with four times the torque you actually need. Match that servo motor with a properly sized gearbox — say, one from Bonfiglioli's servo range with verified backlash and torsional stiffness data — and you can get identical performance at roughly half the budget.

What VFD stands for (and why it matters before you buy)

If you're buying a gearmotor, you'll almost certainly control it with a VFD. That's a Variable Frequency Drive — a device that varies the frequency supplied to a motor to control its speed and torque.

The procurement angle is this: VFD operation changes the thermal load on the motor. At low speeds — say, 5 Hz — the motor's own cooling fan becomes far less effective, which is why you sometimes need forced cooling or a higher thermal class motor. Per IEC 61800 (the drive standard), this is well-documented territory. A manufacturer's engineering support should catch it at the sizing stage. It's exactly the kind of detail that separates a reliable supplier from a parts shipper.

When you should NOT pay a premium for Bonfiglioli

Look, I'm not here to sell you the brand on every line item. As a cost controller, there are times I recommend against it:

  • The duty cycle is light — a few hours a day, low shock loads.
  • The failure consequence is low. If it stops, you fix it next week with no penalty.
  • You keep a spare unit in stock anyway.

  • The gearbox is going somewhere hard to access, and failure means disassembling someone else's machine.

Bottom line

Six years into this role, the most expensive component we ever bought was the one that failed at month 11 and took a production line down with it. Not because the engineer picked cheap — because nobody calculated the cost of being wrong.

Compare total cost, not sticker price. And if the deadline is real and the consequence of failure is steep, the certainty of on-time delivery is worth whatever premium you're paying.
